Summarize the overall topic or ‘big idea’ that describes this inquiry project
Students will choose a topic of interest to them that is relevant to the CGW4U course.They will be conducting thorough research about a topic and writing a major paper as their course culminating activity.Part of the project also involves the creation of a 10-minute documentary film about the topic (working in groups of 4).
Identify the associated curriculum expectations -use the methods and tools of geographic inquiry to locate, gather, evaluate, and organize information
-analyse and interpret data gathered through research and investigation, using a variety of methods and geotechnologies
-communicate the results of geographic inquiries, using appropriate terms and concepts and a variety of forms and techniques
List product(s) students will be asked to complete
Through a series of exploration and research lessons in the library, they will develop the following:
-preliminary research and topic selection
-finding a minimum of 6 sources (2 must be academic journals)
-developing research questions
-developing a working thesis
-essay outline
-reference list (maybe an annotated reference list)
-a 10-minute documentary film
-a final research paper (6-8 pages)
How will Global Issues in Context be incorporated as an essential resource?
This will be the main entry point of research for the project.Students will begin their preliminary and exploratory research using the Global Issues in Context site.Students may also pull video and audio clips from the site to use in their film project.We will also use the Research Tools (e.g. topic selection, citations, thesis statements etc.) developed by the site to guide some of the research steps outlined above.
